Symbols

  • Patriarch: Yitzchak (here represented by his wife, Rivkah): The Torah indicates that Rivkah endured a difficult pregnancy, as her twin sons (Yaakov and Esav) vied for different things while in the womb. Likewise, she and Yitzchak favored them differently.
  • Tribe: Reuven. Reuven conflicted with his father after moving his step-mother Bilhah’s bed (a controversial verse), and lost his right as the firstborn to Yosef. Nevertheless, he was the one who convinced the rest of his brothers not to kill Yosef in their conflict of jealousy and anger. Here he is represented by mandrakes, supposedly good for childbirth (middle left), per the famous story where he gave them to his mother, Leah. Rachel, herself always in conflict with Leah, persuaded her sister to give the mandrakes to her instead.
  • Zodiac: Cancer (סרטן). The crab claws are open on the more destructive side of the page, and are closed on the other side.
  • Planetary body: The Moon. Similar to Cancer, the moon is full on the constructive side, and a thin crescent on the other.
